Ups and Downs

Following a fantastic weekend the week went steadily down hill, culminating in torrential rains from Tuesday night through Wednesday. At one stage 107mm (over 4 inches) of rain fell in a single 24hour period.

After the rains the snow guns were fired up repairing the main piste runs. Considering the amount of snow base damage done the snow makers and groomers did an amazing job.

Friday was highlighted by a blackout in the village. When I looked out my window I saw all chairlifts stopped until the diesel back-up engines were fired up.

The snow pack was very firm with only on piste skiing and boarding worthwhile. Top to bottom runs are still in very good condition.

By Sunday the next change started moving through and by afternoon under very grey and windy skies the on piste snow began to soften to an enjoyable consistency.

Despite big winds the Big Air was held above Merritts today. Some competitors pulled out ruling the very strong winds too much.

Snow is forecast tonight through to Wednesday with another front close behind arriving next Friday (unfortunately with rain forecast before snow).
