Wind, Lightening, Rain & Flu
Today was my first day out after two days off. From my window I knew that I wasn't missing anything yesterday. To my surprise I found out today that the rain I saw falling in the village yesterday was also falling right to the top of the resort and a considerable fall it was if the ice sheets were anything to go by today.
Together with the wind, electrical storms stopped all chairs on more than one occasion yesterday. Frustrating for those on the hill but nobody wants to be fried by a lightening strike.
Wind once more had Kosi Express and Cruiser on wind hold this morning so it was off to Gunbarrel for me. I had expected more dry wind blown but having beaten off the Thredbo Flu over the past two days I was glad to get out today.
The T-bars opened late which meant a few very fast runs down High Noon - good practice for Saturday's 'Top To Bottom' race. Must remember to put my skis in for a tune.
Michael's Mistake was good before it tracked out. Wiamea was nice (apart from the icy top) but best off all were the slopes from the high traverse (between Merritts and top of Gunbarrel) and the cat track between the same. Howie and I had several great untracked runs through here before any one else cottoned-on to why we had such big grins on our faces.
As fast as I could find fresh fingers of wind-blown the ski patrol would close the access to it, fearing the slippery ice flows too dangerous for the unsuspecting to navigate.
Fresh wind packed powder off Wiamea
Looking down towards a closed Cruiser base
Not so grippy frozen rain soaked base at the top of Merritts
The sun is now shining and all lifts appear to be running. Forecast is isolated showers tomorrow (should be snow as the wind chill this morning felt like something below -20C) followed by a fine Friday and more snow on the way for Saturday.
