Switching To Spring
It's as though someone threw a switch at the beginning of Spring, bringing brilliant sunshine, light breeze and wonderful snow conditions. The groomers have been having a treat. Saturday morning (a bit grey to start) saw The Face (as ski patrol call it, Upper True Blue on the map and Hollywood to others), directly under the top of Kosi chair, groomed once more. It was bumped up again within hours but was fun for all first thing yesterday.
With the Australian Children’s Championship ski races being held on World Cup over the weekend, the best options for top to bottom were Little Beauty and True Blue, both groomed to perfection. Snow making (yes, even though it's now September) has been huge the past two nights and added freshies to Little Beauty, if you were early enough.
The other special treat is the big super-wide groomer down Exhibition, across the traverse then down the face of Q5 (beside the big jump), across the next traverse and then all the way to bottom (back door) of Sponars T-bar. Note to self: should go further north in the resort and check out Waimea, Powder Bowl, etc.
Mountain staff have been busy both days repositioning (lifting) the padding on lift towers and putting poles above snow fences buried under metres of snow. Yes, there's so much snow in the resort.
Out of the resort the snow is still deep and soft - yummy. Did the Gap yesterday, probably my best run this season. Today I staggered up Sig Hill. I'm so not fit. There was a group enjoying a couple of big jumps on the North Face, one man-made, the other a natural wind lip. I left them in peace and skied the Main Face.

The charts have been changing daily in the usual radical way. Some forecasters have lowered their predicted snowfall for later this week and there's been talk of the 'R' word and even our friend Gale Force. I expect the charts will keep changing and even then, will still be wrong on the day but there's definitely something afoot around Wednesday to Friday. We just need the Adelaide temps to drop a degree or two.
