Only A Few Weeks To Go

A sunny weekend with diminishing wind was enjoyed by only a few people this weekend. There were not a lot of people on the slopes this weekend and yet there is a stack of snow. Sure the thinning continues on lower slopes and high traffic areas but for this time of year conditions are great.

A group of us decided to head out of the resort for a picnic lunch on Saturday. With a moderate breeze still blowing we took some time to find a reasonably protected spot to enjoy lunch. The off piste was a mix of freeze and sticky wet with occasional strips of dry-ish windblown powder. After lunch the frozen crust had thawed and we had a pleasant run down to Dead Horse Gap.

Sunday started slightly firm but not uncomfortably and the snow continued to thaw all day, eventually to the point of getting too sticky to enjoy with tired legs. We played inside the resort and found the steeper runs up high were providing lots of fun even as the snow softened.

Temperatures have been just above 0C up top and lower overnight to firm up the snow. The forecasters have winds increasing and weather deteriorating towards the end of the week. No reports of any significant snow falls.

The official end of the snow season is only 2 weeks away. Some resorts are talking of extending to the 10th of October. There is certainly enough snow at present to do so.
