A Hard Rain

Prior to Sunday, Thredbo had a week of clear sunny days with firm snow pack in the morning softening through the day. Yesterday had high overcast conditions that moderated the air temperature and the consequent impact on the level of snow softening. Unfortunately it started raining yesterday evening and has not let up.

Up until yesterday Thredbo had only received for the month of August 1/7th of the total precipitation for August last year. For the first 9 hours of today we received 70mm bringing the August total up to half of the total precipitation for August 2003. And it is still raining.

We are now awaiting the forecast blizzards to bring some relief to the ever-growing grass and mud patches. All we need is a drop in air temperature of 3 or 4 degrees. Looking out my window I cannot see anybody riding the chairlifts or water skiing down the slopes.

I’ll drop an update in here when at last the rains turn to snow. Meanwhile it’s an inside day today.
