Spring in the Air

After approximately 120mm of rain over Sunday night and Monday there was considerable damage done to the snow pack. Tuesday offered some light relief with 5-10cm of fresh snow following the rains. The new snow was like soft ice cream upon a firm base. Where the firm base was smooth the skiing and boarding was truly delightful but if you got into areas where the base consisted of frozen ruts and lumps then there was no comparison.

After Monday the sun was out and regular spring conditions prevailed. Wednesday and today were typical. Firm base with a softening layer on top. Snow making has continued over the last few nights, surprising me as I thought that snow making stopped at the end of August. Generally temperatures have been very mild but not unpleasantly warm. There has been a light breeze and today banks of dark cloud started to appear.

Dream Run and The Schuss are closed, as are some lower trails under Crackenback and Ramshead chairs. Lovers Leap Bypass is still very nice although the entrance today was only 1 metre wide. The lower manmade runs like the Milk Run, Sundowner and lower High Noon are very sticky but upper areas are almost chalky.

Today the Sprite Big Air comp was held beside Antons and provided some interesting entertainment. All lifts except Ramshead have been open and the slopes have not been crowded.

There is some possible snow forecast tomorrow but nothing big appearing for some time.
