First Ski For 2012
Sunday was a perfect day in Thredbo. Sunny, almost calm, temperatures hovering around 0C and snow from the village to the top. The Kosciuszko Express quad chair opened for the first time since its maintenance period and Marion & I decided a little skiing out behind Thredbo was in order.
The snow conditions up top were surprisingly good. Unlike the soft and sticky snow in the village on Saturday morning, the snow out back was firm on the big wind drifts and even with some light 5-15cms on top of that base. The cover sitting on the bushes was bouncy and not conducive to walking. There had been a couple of groups ahead of us and everyone headed out in different directions. Marion and I wanting just a little pre season warm up decided to skip Sig Hill and go to the opposite peak above Summer Drift.
It was fun and when we finally got back to Eagles Nest I thought I had done just the right amount of exercise. Then I discovered I had dropped my skins on the return trip. Stupid boy had to go back and retrieve them - certainly a bridge too far.
Saturday: Riverside Cabins beyond the 9th Hole on Thredbo Golf Course
Marion on the DHG bridge on Saturday
Thredbo River at DHG - Saturday
The Bluff - Sunday
North Face of Signature Hill
Marion's first tentative turns
Soon she was doing 8s on my turns
There was a lovely soft topping on a smooth firm base
Looking from the bridge back toward Eagles Nest
That classic shot of Sig Hill from the bridge
I hope to get out again before the next dump this weekend.
I've now done 3 rapid reports in a row. Click here to see yesterday's report from the village.
I heard on Ten News that Perisher have announced lifts opening next weekend. Now there's a challenge to KT to open something in Thredbo.
