Great Weather For Touring ... But ...
The Kosciuszko Express chairlift reopened in Thredbo today after its pre-winter maintenance. The sun was shining and only a breath of wind could be found to drop the apparent temperature down below zero.
I went for a short stroll out behind Eagles Nest to check out the snow - a reconnoitre for a possible ski tour tomorrow. Alas, I assessed the snow cover as simply too shallow to enjoy any touring. The main range looks to have a better cover from afar but I don't think it worth walking all that way carrying skis in a vain hope of finding the cover 10-20cm deeper.
In my opinion, another natural fall is needed before ski touring is on. For hikers, the metal walking track is still clear of snow for much of the way to Rawson's Pass, although it is particularly icy around the top of the lift at Eagles Nest.

The forecasters are not very optimistic towards snowfalls over the next 2 weeks. Hopefully cold, clear nights will allow for extensive snow making and some nice skiing and boarding on the June long weekend. We have certainly been experiencing these conditions recently.
You only have till Tuesday to get your early bird platinum lift pass. I look forward to using my new pass next Wednesday.
