Two Down ... Many To Go
The second weekend of the 2003 snow season has seen fresh snow in Thredbo village for the second time in as many weekends.
Good snowfalls on Friday night and blizzard like conditions during Saturday meant only a handful of skiers & boarders ventured out into delightful snow conditions. Initially only Merritts and Friday Flat were open but we were fortunate to be amongst the first onto a newly opened High Noon which has one of the best covers I can remember in years.
Snow Gums chair opened and by the afternoon the Cat Track (further widened during the off season) was opened. Together with a creamy fresh cover on Sundowner the two sides of the resort were linked. The snow and wind continued all day but by midnight the stars and full moon were visible.
Sunday morning heralded a clear (yet still very windy) day. The fairer weather brought many more locals out onto the slopes together with a host of day visitors. There wasn't actually any lift lines but every chair on the Kosciuszko Express (opened for the first time for skiers & boarders) had someone seated on it. The good snow conditions had me off my rock hoppers for the first time this season.
The wind chill was low and the soft creamy snow of yesterday had been hammered into the base overnight. The occasional pocket of wind blown or protected pocket of powder was in stark contrast to the firm and fast slopes.
Fresh snow on that bridge in the village again!

It this year's pattern is to be fresh snow on Friday/Saturday (2 out of 2 so far) there are sure to be some more excellent weekends to come. We finished the weekend with a great ski down a groomed Lover's Leap Bypass, looking its best in many years.
With the much reduced air temperatures the snowmaking ran most of the weekend. Rumours have Anton's T-bar opening mid week. Only two weeks till the school holiday crowds appear.
