Making It Stick
I awoke on Monday morning to the sound of rain and decided to stay in bed for another hour. I did eventually go out around 2:30pm only to find out the snow was as sticky as the inside of a honey pot. Worse still, I heard from several, who bravely fronted the misty morning, that the morning snow was not too bad at all.
On Tuesday Mark & Keith came to DHG for their first time. They enjoyed the run but weren't too happy about the first-timers initiation ceremony of throwing them into the Thredbo river afterwards ;-) Conditions were quite pleasant and even though the snow base was shrinking rapidly, the skiing even at lower levels was on a good base. That may not be the case by this weekend.
Traktorman came to Thredbo on Wednesday to test his new boots prior to his summer sojourn. The testing was on soft snow from the start and the off piste became very sticky by late morning. Today wasn't much different except that an increase in the wind kept comfort levels at a more preferred temperature for me.
We were really lucky that we didn't get anything like the rains forecast this week. We had none yesterday or today. Unfortunately the giant hair-dryer is reducing the snow pack every day. Grooming has been cut back and neither True Blue nor Little Beauty have been groomed for some days. This could be due to the wet snow conditions and thinning base. Don't get me wrong; there is still a massive base up high.
Boarder-Dude has joined us in Thredbo after a long time away. He's certainly getting a work out in the heavy conditions.

Looks as though the weekly winter pattern might have finally broken. How will we survive without freshies on Friday & Saturday? Well, we might just get some more snow on Sunday / Monday :-)
Meanwhile the red dust is back big time. Snowgums has been closed this week but it really hasn't been needed as there are so few riders on the slopes.
Have you bought your super discounted (Thredbo 365) 12-month pass? There's only 10 days left to get it and remember, with all the polar ice melting it has to end up somewhere ;-)
