Where’s That Confounded Bridge?

After a very pleasant long weekend away with Annie in Narooma I returned to the rains of Thredbo and the Snowy Mountains. Lower regions like Berridale had received very little rain while Thredbo was getting around 25mm every day and a lot more in the past 24 hours.

When Marion, who took a side trip to Dead Horse Gap on her way back from Jindabyne, said that the walking bridge at DHG was "gone" I needed to find out more. Like where had it gone, how much had gone, etc.

There had been a tremendous amount of rain overnight and I was told the Thredbo river had last night, for a 3rd time this year, broken its banks and flooded the road in the village. Regardless of this it seemed unlikely to actually wash away the iron bridge over the Bogong Creek.

I drove up to DHG this afternoon with Marion and, as the photos below will show, there is no sign of the bridge. I can only think of three credible explanations. 1) The bridge broke up into much smaller pieces (still hard to believe) and is now lying at the bottom of the deeper water holes in the creek. 2) RTA or park rangers took it away but there are no tyre or any other tracks in the deep moist soil to indicate this. 3) Aliens souvenired it whilst stopping for a BBQ - mostly likely explanation.

I'm pleased to report that the two walking bridges between Thredbo and Dead Horse Gap (those over the Thredbo River) are still standing.

Grump: I was going to report some observations about politicians, diplomats and Julian Assange but then how could I fight off a sustained cyber-attack by the almighty forces fighting against free speech? Oops, hope I haven't already gone too far.
