The Big Wet

Huge rainfall has had the Thredbo River break its banks and has done considerable damage to the ski slopes due to creeks breaking through the snow pack.

It started raining on Thursday and let up on Friday before hammering the mountains incessantly from Friday night through to this morning. I didn't get to Thursday's Memorial Race because of the rain. Sorry no photos.

We had in excess of 100mm in the last 24 hours (124mm in the past 48hrs) but at last it seems to be letting up and some snow has been falling.

I didn't ski in the torrential rain yesterday and I haven't ventured out today - although that may change later if conditions are suitable for me to get a few more photos.

I did take a walk/slosh around the village mid afternoon. Some hours later the river rose enough above its banks to flood some cars parked beside the Village Green. I've never heard of that happening before.

The rain/flood damage has closed some runs and lifts but hopefully new snowfall and work by the grooming team will repair much of that.

If you are not happy with the layout of the revamped web pages on the Bureau of Meteorology web site for the Snowy Mountains District and Alpine Centres then email them and tell them so. Personally I don't find either page as good as the old page because there is less information and what is displayed is not as easy to scan over as before. I won't pre-empt your opinion with specifics but if you find the old layout was better then tell the BOM so. Remember, we're paying them.
