The Carnival Is Over

Carnival Week ended last night with the traditional Frank Sinatra night. This weekend also saw the Interschool National Finals being held in Thredbo. Despite a very warm weather spell the Thredbo staff managed to prepare a host of racecourses.

The warm weather prevented any further snowmaking and the groomed slopes were soft from early in the morning. This resulted in slush bumps appearing even before midday especially as the race competitors and support staff were on the mountain very early each day.

I spent much of the weekend beyond the resort tinkering with my kite in the fickle winds. This kept me away from the race crowds and provided only slightly less soggy snow conditions (sorry that should read spring snow conditions).

Surprisingly you could still ski to the bottom via both the Supertrail and High Noon. The base is holding up so well that I have yet to pull out my rock-hoppers.

Fancy dress cross country event from Thredbo to Perisher

The grass and rock patches are growing even on the main range

There is rain and some possible snow forecast late Monday through Wednesday. It will be interesting to see how the snow base survives. PerisherBlue have announced they will remain open till October 13th. With luck, so will Thredbo.
