Corduroy Central

Following Monday’s snowfall in excess of 30cms, the groomers had something to work with and work they did. Tuesday morning saw a couple of centimetres of light fresh on top of a wonderfully groomed surface. This was the closest thing to Utah corduroy I have experienced in years. The off piste was a little heavy in places and firming up in others, mainly due to a mist that sat on the upper mountain all morning.

I did five top-to-bottoms in just over an hour and I wasn’t even trying. The snow condition was that magical confidence-building stuff that lets you hang out at speed on any run. Groomed runs included, True Blue, Little Beauty and everything off the Supertrail and World Cup.

This morning I was in line early. The sunshine and the grooming and the lack of people on the mountain had several of us flying down the hill. Kosi chair had a little mishap starting up this morning but even so I found myself at the top of the chair at 9:37am ready to start descent number 6. Rosco would have loved it. By the way, Rosco, everyone is asking where you are. I figure it must be just a few more days – in time for the BIG dump.

The on-piste is sweet. The off-piste is variable: firm, rutted, bumped and yet still dry up high. Once away from the resort the off-piste is wow – great. A couple of cms of soft on a base firm enough to not trap your ski but not firm enough to feel firm - creamy and delicious.

There is a change due tomorrow with strong wind, some drizzle and then snow. Lots of snow and for several days. If you don’t mind being out in the blizzard then it should be great. Hopefully we won’t get any of the “R” word forecast and hopefully the winds won’t close any lifts.

One local pointed out to me today that the crows have left the village indicating one BIG dump is one its way.
