Premature Kick Off
Well it didn’t snow the way I expected last week. Based upon past experiences, whenever I leave Thredbo within a month of the official start of the season there has been a snowfall, sometimes of some significance – as my friends continue to remind me.
But this time it didn’t snow. That doesn’t mean there wasn’t fresh. Due to a very cold temperature inversion the snow guns were fired up on the weekend. The concentration was on Friday Flat where a pod of snowmaking whales can still be seen. Of course I missed this. On my return on Sunday afternoon I could see the snowmaking pond had frozen over but now the temperatures are back up above zero and there isn’t much to show for the cold snap.
However, It did snow last night. We had thunder, lightning, rain, hail and sago. At 7:30am this morning there was no snow to be seen on the ground in the village but 5km north of the village the road was covered by about 5mm of dry sago and small drifts could be seen on the side of the road. A further 5km along the Alpine Way and the road was just wet. Talk about ‘local’ falls.
While snow was being made in Thredbo I was at Sapphire Speedway (watching)
Upper Supertrail yesterday
Snow spots on lower Sundance
Test spot behind the tennis courts
Snow making will continue as soon as conditions are right. Kosi chair is open.
Only one more weekend before the long weekend. Time to get those quads tuned, boards waxed and gold fillings cashed in for buying petrol (and you thought it was expensive in the city).
