And An Avalanche To Boot
Wow what a difference an hour or two makes. Earlier this morning it snowed. Only 5cm said the report but what a change from the weekend. Kosi Express started late, as did many lifts due to the need to de-ice first.
Sunny and patchy blue sky, cool temp, an OK breeze and fresh snow that fell to levels way below the village.
Under foot the off piste was interesting. Light and dry on top but underneath there was soft or lumpy or ice. No matter, it was great.
Ski patrol were out early looking for wind loaded snow on an icy base. Hard to believe how only a 5cm fall can lead to slides. Some nice slabs were shifted off the Bluff but later in the morning while I was riding Kosi Express I watched as a skier rode up the face of a ridge, got a little air, landed and brought the face down with him/her. The skier stayed upright and was making like a swimming motion and managed to ski out of the debris when the slide stopped. It only went may be 30m but I bet that was one shaking skier. It happened too fast to get my camera out – what a great shot it would have been.
I finished the morning sharing first tracks down to DHG with Marion who called on a good friend to pick us up. It was the second best run I had to DHG all season. Not really deep but light, silken and fast enough to not have to pole at any point.

There was a smile on every face this morning. The forecasters say there is still more to come. There won’t be any complaints from this village, which by the way has a stack of vacancies this week.

PS: For those who asked - I used the new boots today and my feet are learning to conform ;-)
