Typical Spring Conditions

A few days ago I was awoken very early by the sound of pouring rain. Interschool races always seem to bring out the worst in the weather. The snow base down low suffered a little but with such a deep snow base there was only the odd grassy patch appearing. The weekend snow was soft and damp but that all changed by Monday morning.

Typical spring conditions have set in this week - warm sunny days softening the snow and cold clear nights refreezing the snow, bumps and ruts. The groomers had their first real challenge on Monday morning as evident by the death cookies and occasional gouges in the piste.

The chaos of Central Spur was further highlighted in the grooming efforts trying to deal with the area still divided into two uneven halves by the terrain park and roped fences.

The crowds are down and the weather is fantastic. The early fog burnt off quickly revealing the hard and fast piste and then after an hour or two everything softened so even the off piste bumps are forgiving and gentle under foot. The grass patches around village elevation are growing in size as the valley temperatures rise a little further each day.

You can still ski and board into the village by any trail, under any lift line or through the trees. My current favourite is Lover’s Leap Bypass with a great cover, freshly groomed each morning and no one using it.

The snow makers were out early this morning topping up the lower slopes and the forecasters have more snow coming this Friday. Today looks like a repeat of yesterday.
