When You’ve Had Just Too Much Piste

Another clear blue sunny day and temperatures rapidly rising above zero. With a nice breeze blowing and a couple of Victorian friends keen to see more of the NSW share of the Alps we started out late morning, myself with traction kite stowed in my back pack.

Winds were varying from 30kph at 8am to 50kph by 11am as we hiked out of the resort and dropping to almost 0kph on our return trip around 2pm. We went out about 2/3rds of the way towards Mt Kosciuszko, climbed a peak and had a very pleasant lunch.

I set the kite for the return trip but dropping wind speed and the usual variations of wind shadow around some peaks made flying difficult. For the return trip back towards Thredbo, the winds were at least favourable enough to tow me up the last hill.

The snow was mostly soft but there were still some hard packed super-slick sections and occasional crunchy patches waiting to surprise you.

What more can I add? We had a great day and as the photos show there is some weather on the main range. Hope we get something significant out of it as some high traffic areas in the resort are not looking good.

No photos of the kite this trip but I believe there is some video.
