Blue Sky, Sunshine and Crowds
The best weekend of season 2015 thus far, began with the opening of The Basin T-bar. But before that I had second tracks down True Blue, groomed with 5cm (yes 5cm) of fresh man-made snow on top of the grooming over the entire run. It was great - apart from a fall I had at the bottom when slowing to take a photo.
With skier's thumb I short-cutted my way to the Basin T-bar via the Bluff to get some untracked. There was very little groomed in the Basin and the untracked freshies were the best of it. After 2 runs the queue was - need I say - huge and I abandoned the idea of any more runs in the Basin.
Today, Sunday, was as forecast, a blue sky day with only a light breeze. I packed my skins and camera. The Basin was only a shade of yesterday's fun - now bumped and chopped and without freshies. Karels T-bar opened (for the first time this year) as I got to the top. More freshies :-) I had 3 nice runs on untracked snow and then headed out towards North Ramshead.
The snow quality was spot-on - soft and dry and with a much better cover than I had expected.
Following my return to Thredbo last weekend, the week has produced some great skiing and now I can tell you that the main range snow is sweet as...
Everest in the far background behind the top of Signature Hill
North Ramshead to some - Pyramid to others ( but not yet)
Club Lake Chutes
Mount Kosciuszko and the start of its cornice
Etheridge
Looking north towards Blue Lake
The North Face of the 'hill' was just lovely
Looking down Merritts Creek from the bridge
That standard shot of the 'hill' from the bridge
Something I've never seen before - not parliament but
Hot Air Balloon on the Village Green
Unfortunately I have to return to Sydney for a while so I'll apologise now for the lack of natural snow falls (and lack of reports) over the next week or so. The good news is that the continuing very cold nights will allow for huge amounts of snow making.
The next reasonable snowfall is probably around the 28th.
