Diminishing Returns

While the stock market jumps up and down, the snow pack is just going down. Supertrail, Walkabout and Friday Flat are still open. For how long is unknown. I thought it would have gone before today. Mini freezes over the last two nights have helped as have the groomers who seemed to have tapped into a hidden supply of “white” snow over the last two nights.

Last rights to many parts of the resort were, as usual, a quiet and lonely event. I visited High Noon, Merritts and the Basin on the weekend before all (but Walkabout on Merritts) were closed for season 2008.

I have religiously gone out each morning thinking “this is the end” and to my surprise the Supertrail has been better each morning than the previous. That can’t last but just may be it will make it to the long weekend – barring the forecast hight temps and rain.

The main range is reportedly in the same dire straits as the slopes in the resort. I think this may be my shortest season in Thredbo even though it spans from April to October.

There are very few people around, which is just as well considering the ever narrowing strip of skiable snow. Who would have thought that at the beginning of September?

Grumpy Report: Alas the tunnelled vision of our learned friends spouting carbon reduction. It is forecast that the price of electricity will rise by up to 37% in an effort to reduce carbon emissions. However, higher electricity prices will result in burning trees for heating, candles for lighting and using cars instead of high priced electric trains. Hmm?
