A Short Break

Leaving Thredbo for the weekend I expected snow to fall. And fall it did – about 10cm on Saturday night but by my return late on Sunday afternoon there was not much to see for it. Despite the wind chill reaching down into to –20C range, pretty well almost any new snow that did not fall on existing snow had melted by my return.

Drizzling rain is blowing up the valley from the SW and it is cold. Last week had mostly been clear blue skies and warm temperatures. Warm enough, especially overnight, to leave the snow pack still soft and sticky. The winds that blew really put any idea of trying the main range into the too-hard basket.

At least last night there was a decent freeze on the main range so things may improve.

The weather maps look very impressive. I can’t find a positive forecast but if (and always a big ‘if’) the next cold front is not pushed away then we will see more snow and a lot of cold air.
