Flying Wombat

Last weekend Annie and I took advantage of the beautiful weather and went on a mini adventure up the Kosciuszko Road. First stop was Guthega, which was a mild shock. I had not driven around there since the bush fires and the impact of the bare valley was profound. A tasty pub lunch followed our short walk and a visit to “Flying Fox”. The noise and grating of metal on metal made the “Flying Fox” feel and sound more like a “Flying Wombat”. It was easier to cross the creek by the stepping-stones than “Flying Wombat”.

I was surprised by the number of March flies that we encountered at Guthega especially when I haven’t been accosted by the nasties at or above Thredbo.

Generally the weather has remained “cool” when compared to the rest of the state. We have had a little rain and everything is as green as the mould that I found on my cheese.

Yesterday was the reverse Thredbo Top To Bottom. A good size group of runners took on the gruelling run up Crackenback to Eagles Nest. The winner did it in 19 minutes and 34 seconds. Not the fastest ascent but more than a tad better than my best at 1 hour and 5 minutes.

The 15th Thredbo Blues Festival is on next weekend. The forecast is for fine weather and greart music.

Grumpy Report: The NPWS have opened the “pass holders lane” on the Alpine Way but did not do the same on the Kosciuszko Road. Considering the huge number of vehicles we saw at Charlotte’s Pass last weekend, I fail to see why annual pass holders (who pay $190 per annum) have to queue behind day visitors when a perfectly good lane is available albeit for the lane dividers closing the pass holders lane. Come on NPWS, what have we paid for?
