That Makes a Trifecta
Yesterday presented itself as yet another day for freshies and for the first time in ages the KT site was correct in that they had groomed World Cup on the one day when it would have been nicer to not have. Oh well, you can't have everything ;-)
We did have fresh dry (really dry) snow on top of Monday's fall. Visibility was again a challenge but some wind drifts were awesome. The wind was extreme with wind chills touching on -20C but lifts remained open.
The tree lined runs had the lightest snow but the exposed runs gave you fresh tracks every run. Little Beauty was ... and Merritts Falls was deep, not that I could see much. The Basin had wonderful wind blown and on one run the sun came out and I could see what lay ahead of me. The rest was soft, smooth, Braille skiing - that's possibly an oxymoron - smooth Braille? Vertigo was an issue at times in the white room with such a strong wind but I did spend a far bit of time in or near the trees.
It was reported this morning, for the 3rd consecutive day, that there was another 20cm of fresh awaiting us on the hill. There were even more early risers this morning, meaning I was further back in the queue, and I had to plan well ahead to ensure I got two virtually untracked runs to the bottom. Some upper runs off the T-bars still had fresh snow filling our tracks but as the day wore on this became less apparent.
Yes, the past three days have been quite wonderful but despite all this snow, the snow pack is still quite thin - particularly noticeable at the bottom of the mountain. Hopefully snow making can deal with this?
Sundance yesterday (Tuesday)
The wall of ice at Eagles Nest yesterday
A pink tinge to Crackenback this morning (Wednesday)
Meadows snow depth yesterday morning and again this morning
Getting freshies in the late morning in-resort and not a closed area
Trees provided better visibility and lighter snow
Wind blown snow kept upper runs topped up but hard to see through
Why not more photos - you ask. Too cold, too windy and having too much fun ;-)
As I put down my pen, the temperature is rising and the wind is dropping. The sun is breaking through and all is set for a big upcoming weekend - bank holiday, long weekend for NSW and ACT with all it's inherent bankers, lawyers, public servants et al.
On the good side - the next snow storm is forecast for around Monday/Tuesday next week :-)
Happy Birthday to Traktorman who has a big 0 on the end of this birthday year.
