Mud Glorious Mud
It has rained in Thredbo every day for the last week with 23mm alone on Saturday, meaning that round one of the RedAss NSW/ACT Downhill State MTB Championship - "NSW/ACT State Series Event Rocky Trails Downhill/Roller Coaster" - was held in very muddy conditions.
An overnight valley fog burnt off early on Sunday morning to reveal a beautiful blue-sky day that remained free of rain even though the clouds built up again in the afternoon. Despite the sunshine many trails were still significantly muddy for competition on Sunday.
It was disappointing that the miserly Squatters Run body corporate were too stingy to allow many apartments access to the drying facilities forcing guests to take their wet and muddy gear into the apartments.
The temperature went sub zero on Saturday night and even deeper last night. The wind chill on the range feels like winter :-)
Base camp for the MTB championships - bottom of Kosi chair - Sunday morning
Sunday morning's splendid blue sky
The trails were still muddy after a week of rain
New snow making going in for the newly dedicated bump slope below BunnyWalk Station
Air time was one way to escape the mud
Maintenance on Kosi chair mid station seems nearly over
Look - nice new metal mesh replacing the old floor boards
One of the start huts above Black Sallees
Note Merritts Creek in the background
More air = less mud
The queue for the "bike wash" extended way back around the building
Easter is upon us and the forecast is for more sub zero temperatures and may be even the odd snowflake on the range.
Don't forget the 27th Thredbo Jazz Festival on May 2nd-4th with a great line up of fantastic musos and singers. But come prepared for the cold, I'm willing to forecast a 'white Jazz fest'.
