Uni Week (One Week)
The first explosion was at around 3am. Whether it be an illegally sourced firework or a home made bomb I cannot tell. I didn't see it but I heard it. No doubt there will be more on my report about this week before it's over.
Ah but I digress. I decided to tour yesterday. The sky was cloudy but not threatening. It was nice to use Karels T-bar to gain some altitude. Karels T-bar was opened on Friday for the first time in 2013 and was much nicer than The Basin. The snow out of the resort was like in my earlier reports: very firm (frozen chicken skin) on the flat but still soft on the steeps.
I stopped on the northern end of the Ramshead ridge, pretty much due south of Mt K and was enjoying a small cup of coffee as low misty cloud, moved in from the west. The top of Kosi was already blanketed and it wasn't long before the white creep moved towards me. By the time I was ready for a descent the light had gone flat and visibility was extremely reduced. I postponed my plans for going further away from Thredbo and instead skied back towards the resort.
As it turned out the thick white blanket stopped over the highest peaks and never moved any further towards the resort.
The snow in the resort was somewhat softer that it had been all week, probably due to the higher temperature and humidity level (both overnight and during the day).
Friday morning and Karels opened first time in 2013
I managed 5 very enjoyable runs in the untouched off piste before the crowds arrived
Heading out yesterday morning (Saturday)
A bank of cloud obscuring the top of Mount Kosciuszko
The cornice has broken away along almost its entire length
Pyramid disappearing before my eyes as the mist rolls in
On the way up - only 40 minutes before the next photo of the same scene
Back down again. Photo of same scene.
Flat light + poor vis = trouble in the high alpine so I didn't hang around
Forget the immediate forecasts, they resemble a yo-yo competition. It did rain in the village this morning and that meant I could have a lie-in. I suspect some light snow over the next 2 days. Everyone, including moi sees a significant snow fall by week's end :-)
No doubt to start Uni Week off, KT is hosting an "ABC" party in the Keller Bar tonight.
I'm told it's not an ABC celebrity party but KT calls it an "Anything But Clothes" party.
So, could it be an:
Anvil Balancing Competition, or an
Android Banana Conference, or an
Autotrophic Beni Consciousness, or an
Auspicious Birthday Cake, or
Androgenous Boy Creations, or
Able Bodied Clowns, or an
Avid Beekeepers' Carnival or ...
And finally, Happy Bastille Day Jean Michel. That will certainly be A Bastille Culinary-feast.
