Four Days In The Mountains

What a difference 4 days (and nights) can make. As you would have seen on my last report, Monday was a brilliant sunny day. Then we had amazing forecasts of up to 50cms of snow falling yesterday - hmm - it was still raining in the village early this morning. Finally the rain turned to snow and around 7:30am there was a couple of centimetres settled in the village. The Thredbo snow report (can I still call it that?) said 25cms had fallen up top overnight.

Well, there was only one way to find out - venture out into the blizzard and find out for myself. Walking across the soggy wood chips at Friday Flat (with just a hint of turning to grey/white) I thought that High Noon was not the place to go and like most others I headed to Cruiser. The snow felt nice but was very hard to see.

It is truly amazing how much grooming was done this morning. Valley View finally open and groomed, Squatters Run groomed and most other little alleyways as well. There were pockets of fresh ungroomed, which were heavy in places and creamy in others - obviously a wind effect thingy.

My run down High Noon later in the morning was surprisingly pleasant. Sure it was wet soft snow at the bottom but I had expected far worse.

It has kept snowing lightly, even in the village, and there is a brisk wind blowing on Merritts and a wind-chill in minus double digits.

Thredbo has a new bus - no ski racks yet - but...

I'm told QLD and NSW private schools holidays start tomorrow. Hopefully a lot more mountain will open. Ski patrol have been inspecting Supertrail. The T's are on the Ski School T-bar and the cover looks good. I couldn't see if the T's were back on Antons yet. Certainly earlier in the week there were none on Antons, Sponars, Basin or Karels. Strange they would wait till working conditions were abysmal to start putting on the T's.

I have re-activated RecentSnow.com with contributions already coming in from Frostbite in Thredbo & Nordic Shelter in Perisher. I'm hoping to have several more locations happening soon. Please pass on your encouragement to the contributors who are providing this service of in-resort snow depth readings for free for you.

PS: The days are getting longer and the snow is getting deeper :-)
