Can’t See the Snow for the Trees

Despite the radio report last Monday, the last lift for skiing and boarding in Thredbo (the Basin t-bar) was closed on Tuesday. By today, I just had to get out on the mountain to see what had happened over the past few days. The snow was quite firm with only the top 1cm softened by the mid afternoon sun.

And what a surprise to see more several new glades of trees being planted on the slopes.

Experience has shown that the placement of trees and snow fences can greatly increase the snow holding capability of the slopes by providing protection from the winds and putting more shadow over the snow.
