Richard's Report - Monday, 18 October 2010 9:15:35 AM

What's Next?

What a week since my last report. After skiing in the resort closed last Monday my body rejoiced in a few days off - without exercise. Then as I started thinking about a back country tour the weather shifted significantly from the blue-sky sunny days we had experienced for weeks on end. From Thursday onwards we had more than 100mm of rain, which together with the associated snow melt (due to the rain), caused the Thredbo River to break its banks on Friday for the second time in the past couple of months.

Sadly, the torrential rain did major damage to the remaining snow pack but then on Friday night it snowed and by Saturday morning there was 5cms in the village and somewhat more up top. It continued to blizzard most of Saturday and brought a full return to winter conditions with a wind-chill on top of the resort of around -20C.

The Bluff looks delicious but it's a no-go (no ski) zone :-(

I had hoped to go touring today but as the sun rose, the cloud dropped and there is still a significant breeze to deal with. And so, I've spent a little time this morning writing this report.

Conditions look to be better tomorrow for a ski :-)
