Ladies Day on the Basin
Some may say the Fat Lady has sung but not for others.
After weeks of warm temperatures softening and rotting the snow pack, overnight temperatures have been plummeting the last couple of nights (below –6C last night) and the main range has set up nicely.
Yesterday’s groomers in the Basin (and there wasn’t a lot of that) were fast and smooth until later in the morning and even then the off piste was still firm. Several locals put in a final appearance as well as a handful of school holiday revellers who had had the resort to themselves for much of the week on discounted lift tickets.
There were about twice as many women as men in the Basin around mid morning – not the normal ratio in a ski resort.
The Basin was still in good condition at its closure. Amazingly, so were several other runs, which with the current return to cold temps could have remained open for the last week of NSW school holidays. Karels, the Bluff and all but the bottom of Antons and Sponars still have a good cover of snow.

The winds have dropped and I hope to get out tomorrow before another change in the weather forecast for Wednesday and Thursday (with possible snow).
For all the staff now packing up and departing, thank you for your wonderful service and friendship during the season. Best wishes in your future endeavours. For those who had too much fun the Bistro last night, take two aspirin and sleep it off in the morning.
