Base Building

Private NSW and general QLD school holidays started this week and crowds were abundant on Monday. I didn’t venture out yesterday – a fairly grey day.

It started snowing early last night and continued right through into this morning. The reports said 40cm up top and 20cm in the village. I certainly agree with the 20cm in the village but I couldn’t find evidence of the 40 up top. One of the groomers said that it was howling up top last night and so the snow was moved around.

I made it onto 5th chair on Kosi this morning. Jumped off Eagle Way into a strange mix of firm base and boot deep moist snow. Much of the front face had been groomed a second time but there were still untracked lines about 10cm deep. Bodies were going down left, right and centre. By second run it was drizzling lightly all the way to the top and the snow (on my unwaxed skis) had become very sticky. More bodies were down along with a few broken bones. There were many on the slopes who were out-of-control and out-of-their-minds.

The cover is much improved and the drizzle stopped pretty quickly. The snow pack around the top of Antons was setting up like concrete while it remained soft and snotty on the lower slopes. The groomed runs were much better than the sticky glue off piste.

We are hoping that the 100-200mm of forecast precip does not happen unless it can chill down. All lifts but Sponars should be open soon.

The roads were chaotic this morning in all directions. Some roads were completely closed while others required chains.

It is currently sleeting lightly in the village with intermittent sunny breaks. And remember - it is still only JUNE!
