Richard's Report - Thursday, 24 August 2006 1:58:23 PM

Oh Dear - Reindeer

See bottom of page for latest Friday update.

It started this morning (Thursday) – lots of precipitation and not a snowflake in sight. In 7 hours today we have had 71% of this August’s precipitation.

But enough about today. Monday arrived with firm snow conditions both on and off piste. On Tuesday the main groomed slopes were soft, enabling big carve turns with pleasure. Yesterday, everything below Kareela was pretty much boilerplate. However there were windblown pockets of delight off the T-bars, as was the case on Tuesday. The wind has blown all week. Not a surprising thing for Thredbo but very unusual for the season of 2006. Temperatures stayed low, generating windchills in the minus twenties.

I tried to go for a ski but couldn’t bring myself to do it. I suspect that the foul weather is directly attributable to the fact that there were interschool races on today.

As I write this report, everything is dropping: the temperature, the wind and barometer and that other stuff. The bureau is forecasting white stuff tomorrow and then fine for the weekend. Hopefully the cooler temps will bring it sooner than later.

I'll update this report if there is any change.

There - I managed not to say that four-letter word even once.

Friday Update: The clear turned to snow on the upper slopes late last night and snow started falling in the village at 7:00am. Now at 11:00am snow is building in the village as it continues to dump. 5cm fresh at midstation and 10+cm off Karels. It will be a great weekend. I've even put my rock hoppers in for their first base rebuild of 2006.
