Snow making began on Tuesday night but after only 30 minutes the temperature suddenly jumped up dramatically and that was pretty well that. Wednesday night was very foggy and but Thursday afternoon the snows had again retreated to the top of High Noon.

Just before 1am this morning it started snowing. Probably the largest snow flakes I have seen in Australia – larger than 50 cent pieces – falling slowly with a total absence of wind. I went to bed wondering if we were to get an 80cm dump like the first big dump in 2005.

When I awoke this morning the village was covered in white but with only an accumulation of about 5cm.

It was interesting listening to Tim Bailey (Sydney weather reporter) talk about the driest autumn in Sydney and warming temperatures, however … following the trend of last April, global warming seems to be in reverse gear in the Snowy Mountains. According to the Thredbo weather station the minimum temperature for May 2006 was 0.8C colder than the minimum in May 2005. The maximum temperature for May 2006 was 3.6C colder than the maximum recorded in May 2005. Precipitation this May was more than four times that of May 2005 being 84.2ml compared to 19.6ml.

It is still snowing lightly and the forecasters have more coming. The long weekend season opening is looking gooooood.
