Official Start Of Season 2004

The official opening of the 2004 ski season started as many have in the past. There was enough man-made snow to get a couple of lifts operating in Thredbo as well as other NSW resorts.

Following the heavy rains last Thursday, snowmakers had enough time to top up Friday Flat for skiing, boarding and snow-play.

Every one in the village was in party mode and the Saturday night fireworks (traditionally the biggest fireworks display of the year) were not to be missed. Bar life became the main attraction later in the evening and the entertainment was just that.

I went and made a few turns on Friday Flat on Sunday morning. Why? - because I could. The weather, although windy enough to close the Kosciuszko Express, was not over powering on Friday Flat.

The blessing of the snow was carried out on Sunday afternoon in the Chapel and prayers said for snow.

Monday brought rain, which finally turned to hail as the temperature dropped and many people left early. Probably a good idea as the potential for dangerous road conditions was increasing every hour.

As I write this it is snowing at the top of the mountain and the wind-chill is –20C. The rooftops are covered with ice - after a sustained hail storm (with some thunder and lightening) this afternoon.

The forecasts look good ... for snow that is.
