A Cruel Blow

Overnight rains have hit the slopes hard. I awoke this morning to heavy cloud still sitting on the mountain and dark spots showing on the slopes where the snow has been washed away. The fact that the snow base has not had a good freeze in many nights meant that the snow pack held little resistance to the heavy rains.

The morning radio snow report stated only 34 lifts open in Perisher Blue whilst Selwyn is down to 1 lift. Thredbo stated all lifts open.

Yesterday was surprisingly pleasant on the slopes. The snow was soft from first run but the Supertrail, nicely groomed and totally devoid of people, was a lot of fun. Other groomed areas like High Noon were also fun to lay down big GS turns on. The off-piste on the other hand was slow and sticky. Probably the red dust blown in ahead of the rains did not help. Unfortunately the red dust will have even worse long term effects on the high alpine snow pack than the rains.

On a good note there are snowfalls forecast for Friday down to 1300m. The Supertrail is still open “top to bottom” so get up here for possibly the last days of those long runs this season.

As I finish this report it has just started snowing in the village. Ah - mountain life. Makes you wonder what tomorrow will look like?
