It's Nearly Over Red Rover
The forecast was for 'partly cloudy'. It was Saturday morning and the start of School Holidays. It was the first nice looking day since Tuesday, when I last went out. Where was the crowd?
Where was the snow? Even before I got on the chair it was obvious there wasn't any true top to bottom skiing or boarding. The Supertrail (now just an oxymoron) was hanging on by the skin of its teeth. You could get down as far as 'Ski-in Walk-out' corner before removing your gear - although I saw some abusing their equipment, sitting on tails over mud, grass, straw and rock. The upper slopes are not too bad. Sponars was nicest until in mid-morning the lift was stopped for 20minutes of maintenance. Antons was OK and Merritts is narrowing - rapidly.
I only heard today that the 'Pond Skim' event had been cancelled. Only last Wednesday I read in the Chamber News that the event was being held at 10am today. I was told today that it had been cancelled 2 weeks ago. Where's the communication? No wonder I'm hearing so many complaints about how the resort is run.
Anyway back to my tour. The Cat Track is almost finished - although only towards the end. The Basin is holding up for now. Antons jumps are all being maintained by a swarm of staff with rakes and Ski patrol are busy de-constructing the closed areas - of which there are many more of than not-closed areas.
First chair for Kosi
Looking back up the 'Supertrail' to Ski-in Walk-out corner
Meadows grass measuring point
Hump Run - a better option than BunnyWalk corner
World Cup closed (I wonder why?)
Signage at the top of the Supertrail
and looking back over the fresh corduroy up towards Kareela Hutte
Looking south towards Eagles Nest from the top of Wiamea (soft from the start)
Looking down Milk Run to Ski-in Walk-out corner
Looking down to Cruiser from Wiamea - close up of Merritts area with no crowds
Many were seen going towards the heavy clouds in the backcountry
Looking up 'Ski-in' and down 'Walk-out' corner
I must admit I enjoyed my turns this morning. I didn't go for speed but maximum turns on the soft base - making the most of the longer runs that will soon be no more. No crowds, no queues - I can only assume everyone is heading to Perisher where I am told the cover is somewhat better.
We never got any of the forecast snow and there doesn't look like anything of substance before the end of the season. I suspect more of the resort (Thredbo that is) will be closed after tomorrow. If you want some nice turns on Central Spur or the challenge of the longer run on Soupertrail, I suggest you get out tomorrow - weather permitting of course.
