Richard's Report - Thursday, 26 August 2010 1:10:39 PM

The Niseko of the South ?

Has Thredbo become the "Niseko of the South"? We have had day after day after day of snowfalls with progressive falls getting deeper. The visibility has been minimal and the winds strong. On top of constant sub zero temperatures the wind-chill has been down below -20C on more than one occasion. The snow quality has been amazing.

Personally I feel that yesterday's 20cm+ freshies were better than today's 35cm+ freshies as the density of today's snow was heavier probably due to moisture content rather than wind packing. Although we were able to see more Ts on the Basin today, the flat light made it very difficult skiing above tree line. Swaggies was deep but also had a 3cm wind crust at the top.

Yesterday the Rim Run was superb and the run to DHG was great. Today Karels was closed and DHG would not have been nice in the deep heavier snow.

Yesterday most runs were groomed early meaning freshies all over. This morning many runs were groomed late and probably just as well considering the depth and heaviness of the new snow. Yesterday my first run down World Cup in freshies was wonderful, while this morning WC was groomed so Richard and I got early turns down a deeper Little Beauty - yum.

It is dumping outside as I write this report. The village is deep in snow and the reports I heard of the road conditions were ugly.
