Forever Young
Yesterday (Monday) the snow was somewhat more packed than Sunday's fresh cover but I think I enjoyed Sunday more. The wind had stripped away the ridge lines and gravel was once more the enemy. Little Merritts was a treat and the vis was marginally better. Although the graphs showed little change in wind speed or temperature I felt more comfortable on Monday although the neck-warmer stayed on.
Now today (Tuesday) was a whole new kettle of fish. My first run, starting directly under the top of Kosi chair was the best in-resort run I have had this season. The wind, now only about half the strength of yesterday had filled in a lot of places including the Bluff and Kareela Face. I didn't need the neck warmer and the visibility was fine early up. The entrance to the Bluff is very thin. I did it once early but didn't go back for seconds. No, the snow is great but the entrance not.
I found the bottom of Hump Run and World Cup nice whilst fresh. The cover around Tower 10 was better than I expected. Antons was nice and I got some enjoyable runs in the wind blown over Q5. Sundowner was ok (note lower case) but I was surprised to see Sundance had gone off a lot since yesterday.
I came off the mountain before The Basin had opened so I can't comment on what it is like. May be tomorrow Karels will reopen? Keep up the good work guys, it's not often you have to rebuild the resort like this and we appreciate the long hours involved to repair the rain damage.
High Noon yesterday afternoon - still snowing lightly
Looking back up to The Bluff this morning
Some of the lower parts provided deep soft turns
And a little slabbing as well
Kareela Face had filled in a lot overnight
The Bluff shot from Kosi chair
Q5 was closed yesterday but looked very nice
Q5 was open today and was very nice :-)
It's snowing lightly outside as I write this report. I think a few more centimetres will fall today. Now hoping the next system delivers more than forecast. It does seem to be developing nicely. In the meantime I look forward to some low wind, sunny days that will allow me to get out back for more freshies :-)
Tommy was out skiing the Supertrail early this morning and looking simply amazing for his 87 years. I left him this morning tucking into a hearty ('heart' being the operative word ;-) breakfast at Eagles Nest. No doubt he would be one of the first to patrol the Basin once it opened.
Happy Birthday Tommy

PPS: If you think my last grump was a bit over the top - I wasn't one of the many who phoned KT, or the NPWS or the police on the night nor one of those who wrote cranky emails. I doubt such a thing will happen again and I hope we can all move on. I applaud any ideas to help promote Thredbo, just think them through first.
