Where's That Big Dump?

The resort is looking very sad. Nothing in the way of a real snowfall has occurred in a long time. More off piste runs have closed and some areas without snowmaking are close to being terminal.

Several of us went out the back of the resort on Saturday and climbed towards the Ramsheads when the cloud very quickly came and reduced visibility to only a few metres. Because of the cloud level, the best skiing was lower than the top of Karels.

We lunched above Bogong before skinning back up again for another run and then down to Dead Horse Gap. The higher slopes were a little tricky. You would get a nice turn or two on 3cms of soft snow and then hit some very firm base - not quite ice but providing little grip for rock hoppers. Once into the tree line, the snow was much more consistent - and soft. You can ski to within 20-30m of the bridge - lovely.

Today I got out late and decided to go on a grand tour of the resort. The base was icy up high but got softer the lower you descended. The manmade slopes are still quite deep down low and an extreme contrast to the state of the non-manmade slopes up high, which are really scratchy. My pick was High Noon while Merritts and Sundowner are holding up very well. Bottom of Supertrail is fine but the top is not. Basin T-bar must be close to being closed, along with Antons and we still haven't had enough snow to open Sponars this season.

Feel a little better now?

The forecast does not look good. The experts are calling for rain mid week with possible snow next weekend. Many of us are now calling for 1m-2m dump in the next one and half weeks.
