Finally ...
Almost 3 weeks into June and some limited skiing has been made available in the resort at Thredbo. After many a grey and damp day, the dawn was spectacular and the cold, clear skies enabled a lot of snow making - although only about 50% of the guns were in operation - concentrating on Friday Flat, Merritts and High Noon.
By 9:00am there was a long queue at the bottom of Merritts Chair. Cruiser Chair was open and waiting for me when I reached the top. Only Walkabout was open and the mountain crew had obviously had to work hard to get that happening. In places the run was quite narrow and I managed to get one good rock gouge (on piste) before my hour was up. Conditions were generally hard packed with brief moments of softer fresh man made. As expected the crowd built and the one run on offer became a bit of a traffic jam with group lessons competing for the same space.
Hopefully with another good night of snow making the conditions will have improved by tomorrow and just may be Ballroom will also be open.
First rays hit Eagles Nest and Central Spur
Looking towards Friday Flat from just above Creek Station
Looking up High Noon from Merritts chair
Walkabout from Cruiser before the crowd
Only a fool will venture into the Powder Bowl or Stanleys
And that fool will probably be in there by Saturday
Nearing the top of Cruiser chair
Looking up Walkabout and across to Wiamea
Looking across to Eagles Nest and a snow covered Eagle Way
Between crowds on Walkabout
Looking down to the bottom of Walkabout
It was simply too dangerous to stop and take photos of the narrower sections.
As the signs say: "Early season conditions exist" so take it easy and get those joints and muscles working gently without injury to yourself or anyone else.
I keep asking myself why I keep looking at the forecasts but if the charts hold true there just could be a reasonable fall of snow Sunday into Monday.
